Hubert? I've heard of him. A friend of a friend knows him. Apparently he's awesome, but we've never met. Well. It's about time you did. Most you connoisseurs would just call him an IPA, but we call him an MPA. The Melvin Pale Ale. A welcomed hand shake to your taste buds. Light, crisp, fresh and a little bitty bitter. Lets just say he won't be that jerk that leaves you at the bar at 2am. He's low in alcohol. What a nice guy... that Hubert. - via Melvin Brewing Company

Yes, We CAN! Canned Craft Beer Festival Set for 4th of July in Bellingham, Washington

Bellingham, WA – This Fourth of July, beer lovers are invited to join RE Sources and The RE Store for a celebration of community and country, award-winning breweries, and our environment in Bellingham. From 6 – 10 pm, the streets outside of Elizabeth Station (neighborhood taphouse and beer retailer in the Fountain District) will be closed down and packed with Pacific Northwest beer lovers and families to enjoy brews from over 40 top craft breweries, cideries, and meaderies, live music from Polecat and Wild Rabbit, creative RE Store yard games, street food, live performances from Bellingham Circus Guild, fun for the kids, and one of the best neighborhood views of the Bellingham fireworks show in town.

You may have noticed the growing trend in your local beer aisle – Pacific Northwest craft brewers are making the shift from bottling in glass to canning in aluminum. Once the packaging choice exclusively of large, inexpensive beer brands, smaller microbrewers are now choosing to forgo glass altogether for lighter, more portable and environmentally-friendly mini kegs.

"The benefits of canned beer far outweigh those of glass bottles,” said Kulshan Brewery owner, David Vitt. "In addition to preventing light penetration which can degrade the quality of the product, canning is a more sustainable, environmentally friendly practice. Its lighter weight reduces fuel in freight transit, and requires significantly less energy to recycle."

According to Islands’ Sounder article Recycling 101, “Glass is an industry-wide problem,” says Orcas Recycling Services Director, Pete Moe. “Until fairly recently, glass had some value, but things are changing. As a commodity, recycled glass is currently worth virtually nothing.”

By contrast, aluminum is worth $1600 per ton. Moe says they are encouraging residents to buy their beer in cans, instead of bottles, and recycle the aluminum.

“As canned beer is becoming more widely adopted throughout the nation, the Pacific Northwest has been behind the curve in consumer uptake. RE Sources endeavors to crush the can stigma in this region with our power to organize people and spread an idea,” says Hannah Coughlin, Manager of Communications and Development for RE Sources, and organizer of the Yes, We CAN! festival.  “As breweries are discovering the economic practicalities and product integrity enjoyed by packaging in cans, we want to see smart packaging choices rewarded by consumers. And we want to see breweries standing tall, proudly announcing, ‘Yes, We CAN!’.”

Tickets are on sale now, at universe.com/yeswecanbeerfest. Volunteer positions are available for free admission and other benefits. More information and volunteer registration can be found at re-sources.org/yeswecan.

All event proceeds benefit RE Sources for Sustainable Communities and The RE Store’s work to promote sustainable communities and protect the people and ecosystems of our region.

Yes, We CAN! is sponsored by Alcoa, KISM, Rice Insurance, Johnson Team Real Estate, and Muds to Suds.

Sun King Brewery Announces
2nd Annual CANvitational

Indianapolis, Ind. - In 2009, Sun King Brewery brought Indianapolis local beer for the first time since the Indianapolis Brewing Company closed its doors in 1948. Sun King will host the 2nd CANvitational canned craft beer festival, Saturday, Sept. 20 on the west block of Georgia Street, located in downtown Indy.

The Sun King CANvitational will bring over 40 craft breweries representing 23 states and international breweries to Georgia Street and Pan Am Plaza from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (EST). Tickets, available online at www.canvitational.com, are $60 for general admission day of the event and $75 for early entry.  Sun King is running a $40 ticket special for advanced general admission ticket purchased online before August 31st.  Event proceeds to benefit the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

The invited breweries were selected because of the quality of craft beer they are producing and, as the name of the event suggests, the festival will feature breweries that can their beers. Since craft beer's inception in the 1980s, bottles have been the most commonly associated with craft beer. However, over the last decade the breweries featured at the CANvitational have been led a revival of craft canning and helped change the way people view cans.

New to this year's festival, the CAN'd ART show on Friday, Sept. 19th located in the Indianapolis Arts Garden.  A celebration of the CANvitational's partnership with the Indianapolis Arts Council and the unique art that adorns the cans we love. Local artists have selected a variety of cans from participating breweries attending the 2014 CANvitational and transformed them into reinvented pieces of art. Join participating brewers and artists in a reception where art and craft (beer that is) collide.  Event tickets include complimentary appetizers and FRESH•LOCAL•BEER will be available. Tickets are very limited.

"We believe that cans are the best way to package beer and breweries from across the country, including a great number of highly respected and established breweries, have help affirm that idea by choosing to can their beer." Said Sun King Co-Founder Clay Robinson. "Cans keep beer safe from two of beers greatest enemies, sunlight and oxygen, in a way that glass bottles can't. Cans are also more environmentally friendly to make, transport and recycle, which is why so many breweries are currently making the choice to can."

In addition to great, canned craft beer, attendees will have plenty of food options for purchase from food trucks that will line Georgia Street. Music will be provided throughout the event by DJ Helicon and DJ Action Jackson.

"We have invited our friends from across the country who share our passion for crafting world class beers and we are excited to showcase what they do and why we can." Robinson added. "The most exciting part is that the majority of the beers available at the CANvitational aren't even available in Indiana, which gives us the opportunity to provide a truly unique experience!"

About Sun King Brewing Company

Sun King Brewing Company is the brainchild of Dave Colt and Clay Robinson. With the help of family and friends - Omar Robinson, Andy Fagg and Steve Koers - the first keg of Sun King beer rolled out the door for delivery in July 2009. Now available on tap and in cans at over a thousand locations throughout Indiana, Sun King has grown into the second-largest beer brewer in the state. The company's commitment to handcrafted seasonal and specialty beers has been rewarded with multiple medals at the Indiana Brewers Cup, Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup competitions. CANFEST Partners with Joseph James Brewing For 6th Annual Event

CANFEST Partners with Las Vegas-based Joseph James Brewing Company to Present its Sixth Annual Canned Beer Festival

RENO, Nev. (July 2014) — Nevada becomes an oasis for canned beer on August 23, 2014 with CANFEST, presented for the first time by the state’s only brewery actively canning multiple brews, Joseph James Brewing Company, Inc. CANFEST celebrates breweries that utilize aluminum packaging and aims to shed light on the quality and vast selection of craft beers in cans.

Now in its sixth year, the festival found an ideal partner in the southern canned beer advocates and their diversity of style offerings, including a gluten free beer. Together, CANFEST and Joseph James Brewing Co. will continue to enhance canned craft beer’s reputation and notoriety in Nevada and beyond.

“The one thing CANFEST needed was an injection of Battle Born love for canned beer,” said event co-producer Ty Whitaker. “Joseph James’s notoriety is skyrocketing. They give canned beer a great name. We are really excited to join forces with such talented brewers.”

“Joseph James Brewing Co. is excited to partner with The Abbi Agency to present CANFEST,” said brand manager Andrea Allison. “We realize this is an opportunity to showcase our growing collection of canned beers and promote the Nevada craft beer community. This event provides an excellent opportunity for craft breweries to collectively educate consumers about their beers and the benefits to serving craft beer in cans.”

The Peppermill Resort Spa Casino hosts CANFEST in the 62,000 square foot Tuscany Ballroom. The event opens at 5 p.m. for VIP ticket holders, 6 p.m. for general admission attendees, and this year is extended until 11 p.m. Additionally, VIP tickets include a full buffet dinner. CANFEST offers more than 100 different canned beers from around the world for unlimited tastings to all ticket holders.

Tickets are on sale now at Craft Wine & Beer, BrewChatter, and online via the Peppermill box office. Advance tickets are $35 for general admission and $60 for VIP. Students can purchase a discounted $25 general admission ticket only at Midtown’s Craft Wine & Beer.

CANFEST will also conduct Reno’s first commercially BJCP sanctioned beer competition this year, awarding medals to individual beers based on the BJCP judging criteria.

In addition to a plethora of canned beers to sample, festivalgoers will enjoy live music from Los Angeles-based folk rock band Rose’s Pawn Shop, a silent disco dance party, and bicycle-related activities provided by non-profit partner The Reno Bike Project.

CANFEST is produced by The Abbi Agency, a Reno-based digital communications firm behind the event since its inception, and presented by Joseph James Brewing Company.

Partners for 2014 include Craft Wine & Beer, Tahoe Mountain Sports, The Can Van, Plato’s Closet Reno, 104.1 KRZQ, BrewChatter, and more. A portion of the event benefits the Reno Bike Project, a non-profit bicycle shop and advocacy group committed to creating a nationally recognized, cycling-friendly community through advocacy, education, and cooperation in the Truckee Meadows.

About Oskar Blues Brewery

Founded as a brewpub by Dale Katechis in 1997, Oskar Blues Brewery launched the craft beer-in-a-can apocalypse in 2002 using a tabletop machine that sealed one can at a time. In 2008, the makers of the top-selling pale ale in ColoRADo, Dale’s Pale Ale, moved into a 35,000-square-foot facility in Longmont, ColoRADo. The brewery has since experienced explosive growth—packaging 59,000 barrels of beer in 2011 and 86,750 barrels in 2012. In December of 2012, Oskar Blues opened the doors to an additional brewery in Brevard, North Carolina. Together, the breweries packaged 119,000 barrels of beer in 2013, distributing its trailblazing craft brews to 31 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.

Recap of Sun King's CANvitational!

Just beyond the pearly gates of our personal heaven lies a view very much like this: 30 breweries from 16 different states serving samples of over 80 different beers, and every one of them served from beautiful craft cans. Such was the real-world view from Georgia Street in Indianapolis at Sun King’s inaugural CANvitational on September 28, 2013.

Ben Low of Baxter Brewing Company (L), Great Crescent and Maui Brewing cans (R)

This was a craft can fan’s dream event with loads of new beers to try, but many other factors made this an extra special fest to us.

Half Acre Beer Company (Chicago, IL)

Highlights included...

Meeting the people behind the beers. We ran into many longtime friends of CraftCans.com, including Ben from Baxter Brewing Company, Matt from Ska Brewing Company, Dan from Great Crescent Brewery, and Jacob from Brewery Vivant...to name just a few.

Dustin and Kristen from Morgan Street Brewery (St. Louis, MO)

We also met some new friends along the way, like Dustin and Kristen from Morgan Street Brewery who traveled from Missouri to share four of their newly canned craft beers.

Tallgrass Brewing Company (L), Sun King Brewing Company (R)

New beers!  - We all like to get our hands on new releases as soon as possible to learn firsthand what new magic has occurred in craft beer. CANvitational attendees were among the very first to try the Sun King/Three Floyd’s collaboration Royal Brat. Tallgrass was there with cans of their newly released Zombie Monkie, so we were able to try a fantastic new porter and get a grip on the first textured craft can (pun fully intended). SanTan brought their recently released super hoppy and super delicious SuperMonk Belgian IPA.

San Tan Brewing Company (L), DC Brau (R)

No tokens required - We really liked this approach for many reasons, especially that we didn’t feel the need to prioritize what beers we wanted to try, and we returned for multiple samples of the same beer to make sure we really liked it as much as we thought we did (and in all cases we were right the first time). We think this contributed to a sense of leisurely beer drinking in a city park – we felt no rush to get one line before another and just moseyed from booth to booth until we visited all.

Mr. Pineapple from San Tan Brewing Company (Chandler, AZ)

The organization and the volunteers - We were very impressed by how well organized the event was. Check in took less than a minute, then we were off to the SanTan booth with our wristbands and sample mugs to get some Mr. Pineapple.

Tin Man Brewing Company (Evansville, IN)

We never waited more than two or three minutes in line at any booth (see no tokens, above), and when our designated driver asked a volunteer to point her towards something not beery she was whisked away and escorted directly to the Bee Coffee booth. Sun King’s Clay Robinson gave a shout-out to all the volunteers in his blog HERE, and we echo his thanks to everyone involved for putting on a remarkable event.

Trent and a big can of Kentucky IPA (L),  New Mexico's Marble Brewing Company (R)

Reserve September 20 on your calendars now for CANvitational 2014…it’s an event you won’t want to miss. We’ll see you there!

Half Acre Beer Company (Chicago, IL)

West Sixth Brewing Company (Lexington, KY)

Tallgrass Brewing Company (Manhattan, KS)

Revolution Brewing Company (Chicago, IL)

DC Brau (Washington, DC)

Sixpoint (L), Alltech's Lexington Brewing (R)

Sun King Announces CANvitational Festival in Indy on Sept. 28th

Indianapolis, Ind – In 2009, Sun King Brewery brought Indianapolis local beer for the first time since the Indianapolis Brewing Company closed its doors in 1948. On Saturday, Sept. 28, history will be made again when Sun King hosts the inaugural CANvitational, the Midwest’s first-ever canned craft beer festival.

The Sun King CANvitational will bring more than 30 craft breweries representing 16 states to Georgia Street and Pan Am Plaza from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets, available online at www.canvitational.com, are $50 for general admission and $75 for early entry.

“We’re incredibly excited to share the beers from these breweries with attendees, especially considering that most of the breweries’ beers aren’t available in Indiana or in many cases outside of their home markets,” said Sun King owner Clay Robinson. “We’ve assembled an all-star lineup of canning breweries from all over the country and our goal is to showcase the great craft beer that is driving the canned craft beer revolution!”

Each of the breweries was selected because of the quality of beer they are producing and, as the name of the event suggests, the festival will feature breweries that can their beers. For decades, the beer bottle was seen as the premier container; however, thanks to breweries like those participating in the CANvitational, a canning renaissance has put pint cans, tall boys and the 12 oz. standard back on the map in a whole new light.

“Cans are a superior vessel for packaging craft beer because they protect the beer from two of its greatest enemies, light and oxygen,” Robinson said. “Every can has a food-safe liner that keeps the beer from ever coming in contact with metal and the result is beer that tastes fresher and more like the brewer intended. Cans also take less fuel to ship and are less expensive and energy intensive to recycle, making them an incredibly sustainable packaging choice.”

In addition to great, canned craft beer, attendees will have plenty of food options for purchase from food trucks that will line Georgia Street, as well as a tent with options from the Omni on Pan Am Plaza. Music will be provided throughout the event by DJ Helicon and DJ Action Jackson.

Oskar Blues Burning Can Beer Festival is Back on June 1st

OSKAR BLUES BURNING CAN BEER FESTIVAL GROWS WITH

LYONS OUTDOOR GAMES AND COLORADO BREWERS GUILD

Lyons, Colorado – The Oskar Blues Burning Can Beer Fest is back (June 1st) for the second year as part of the Lyons Outdoor Games (5/31 to 6/2) to bring you everything craft beer in a CAN offers: fresh, earth-friendly beer in a portable container that takes you to your next soul-saving outdoor adventure.

Oskar Blues Brewery invites all beer lovers to celebrate the REVOLUTION of big-flavored craft beers served up in cans in their hometown of Lyons, CO.  Set amidst the backdrop of beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park in Bohn Park on June 1st, 2013, Burning Can adds a national craft beer influence to the world class events of the Lyons Outdoor Games (May 31st to June 2nd).

Last year Burning Can Beer Fest joined Lyons Outdoor Games and raised $18,000 for beneficiaries while exposing over 2,300 people to canned craft beer, some of which is not for sale in Colorado.  Burning Can offers samples (4pm to 7pm, VIP 3pm to 7pm) of canned craft beer from 35+ innovative canning craft breweries from across the country in the middle of live music by Chain Station, food trucks, Lyons Outdoor Games 5K, Rugby, and the BMX/Mountain Bike dirt-jump & best trick bike competition (followed by DJ Chronz) as world class kayakers are running the river.

The Lyons Outdoor Games kick off Friday Night (May 31st) with a FREE live concert featuring New Orleans' Dumpstaphunk and local band Interstate Stash Express set to the backdrop of Bohn Park.  Now in its 12th year, the multi-sport competition of Lyons Outdoor Games has grown into a world-class celebration of mountain sports drawing heavy hitters from the outdoor industry over three days from May 31st to June 2nd.

“The Lyons Outdoor Games attract world-class athletes but also offer many opportunities for beginner and intermediate athletes to learn and develop skills under the downhome, grassroots feel of Lyons, CO.” says Dave Cosgrove, Lyons Park and Recreation Director. The South Saint Vrain creek is the definition of steep, manky, roadside class V+  for boaters in Colorado and has become the stage for the renowned Adam Barron Memorial Creek race.

What would a CANNED beer festival at an outdoor-sports celebration be without RECYCLING?  Ball Corporation, Novelis Inc. and Alcoa Inc. have stepped up to focus on recycling initiatives.  All money raised from Lyons Outdoor Games recycled cans will be donated to American Whitewater.  American Whitewater is a national non-profit organization with a mission “to conserve and restore America's whitewater resources and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely.”   Canned craft beer has many benefits including defending beer from the damages of sunlight, an air-tight seal that allows less oxygen into the beer creating a fresher tasting beverage. Not only are cans good for the beer, they are also good for the environment.  Aluminum cans are infinitely recyclable and are lighter to ship, reducing the ecological impact. Last, but not least, you can take CANNED beers where your next soul-saving adventure takes you….including places where glass isn’t allowed and where you need to “pack it in, pack it out.”

All proceeds from the 2013 Burning Can event go to the Lyons Department of Parks and Recreation and the Colorado Brewers Guild, two groups that embody the soul of Oskar Blues. The Colorado Brewers Guild is a key player in the continued growth and celebration of Colorado’s craft beer industry.  Lyons Outdoor Games is a tribute to the outdoor sports that helped inspire Oskar Blues to can Dale’s Pale Ale over ten years ago.
